The Alexandria Academy believes that the administration and staff have an educational responsibility to develop attitudes, values and skills that will enable students to achieve personal happiness through professional success in Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Barber-Styling. The Alexandria Academy is dedicated to assisting our students in becoming self-supporting professionals who are worthy members of society and a credit to our profession.

Alexandria Academy of Beauty was established in 1928 and has been owned and managed by Fran and Tereal Calvet since 1978. Fran has been a licensed cosmetologist since 1968 and a licensed instructor since 1977. She is a former member and vice chair of the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology.

Alexandria Academy of Beauty's educational programs are approved by NACCAS (National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences) since 1988. The education programs are approved by Veterans Administration and Louisiana Rehabilitation Services.

The Alexandria Academy has a large clientele for cosmetology and barber/stylist services. This provides ample opportunities for students to have hands on experience as would be offered in a salon or barbershop.

School facilities consist of over 10,000 square feet of classrooms; clinic/lab areas with 60 student workstations, skin care room, administrative offices, student lounge, and educational resource room. The educational staff consists of four licensed instructors with years of salon experience, theoretical classroom teaching experience, and clinic/lab supervision of students.

Hair has been a center of attention since people first began to care about their appearance. Although styles change from year to year, the cosmetologist's task remains the same - to help people look attractive.

Cosmetologists, who are also called beauty operators, hairstylists or beauticians, shampoo, cut, and style hair, and advise patrons on how to care for their hair. Cosmetologists may give manicures, scalp and facial treatments, provide makeup analysis for women, and clean and style wigs and hairpieces.

Most cosmetologists make appointments and keep records of hair color formulas and permanent waves used by their regular patrons. They also keep their work area clean and sanitize their hairdressing implements. Those who operate their own salons also have managerial duties which include hiring and supervising workers, keeping records and ordering supplies.

Cosmetologists and Barbers generally work in clean, pleasant surroundings, with good lighting and comfortable temperatures.

This course in barber-styling is for students who are pursuing a 1500 hour course in order to obtain a license in barbering. The course covers basic knowledge and techniques in developing skills in haircutting, hairstyling, chemical services, as well as knowledge of tools and techniques unique to the barber profession.
